Personal Writing Task: “This, I Believe”

Here’s a really good task that you can use with your class at the start of the year or the start of a semester with a new class to get to know them, without following the same old “write me a letter about who you are” format.  Read the full brief by clicking “read more”, and feel free to share your thoughts on this. When I used this task with my class, I asked students to talk about 2-4 different topics/beliefs, to allow them to cover enough of a variety of topics, yet still provide enough room for them to explain these beliefs in detail.

Purpose of writing:
To prepare a piece of work that details your beliefs, covering a variety of topics such as life after death, religion, our government, war, the environment, poverty, justice and law, moral/ethical dilemmas, or anything else that you would like to discuss about what you believe in. You don’t have to cover all or any of these topics - they are just ideas/suggestions to get you started.

Your task:
Produce a piece of continuous prose about your beliefs, minimum 500 words. This piece is being assessed on your ability to demonstrate effective use of the English language to explain your beliefs in detail and provide a justification for your beliefs. This piece should reflect who you are, so it is important that your personal voice shines through.
